MOVEMENT STYLES

all four styles of movement that the madmovements summer intensive focuses on have different potential approaches.  click the button to watch a video or read below to learn characteristics of each and what I will be primarily emphasizing in this intensive.

BALLET

our first movement, ballet, tends to be characterized by light, graceful, and delicate movements. it can be very precise and technical, and has its own set of vocabulary.  it tends to include elegant hands, pointed feet, and turned out legs.

the madmovements approach to ballet is classical with a contemporary emphasis, meaning it will focus on fundamental steps and vocabulary while also including room for artistic exploration.

MODERN

our second movement, modern, has a very wide range of styles within it, making it difficult to conclusively define.  it was originally intended to be a rebellion against classical ballet.  in general, modern tends to be characterized by freedom of the body and exploring weight, shape, and space.

the madmovements approach to modern is emphasizing improvisation and exploring one's own ideas and feelings.  as my current favorite style to dance, I personally find modern very explorative and open to the mover’s interpretation.

HIP HOP

our third movement, hip hop, is another vast style that originated from the street and initially included popping, locking, and breaking.  it has since been widely commercialized to be found in music videos and dance studios, and is generally characterized by groundedness and a confident, cool attitude.

the madmovements approach to hip hop will focus on an introductory level of commercialized hip hop to provide a foundation before delving into more specialized techniques.  madmovements acknowledges that this style is not always recognized as true hip hop dance, and will discuss its evolution in supplemental videos.

JAZZ

our fourth movement, jazz, usually either refers to theatrical or vernacular jazz.  they have differences that we will discuss, but both tend to be characterized by large, dynamic movements and individuality of the dancer.

the madmovements approach to jazz emphasizes a sassy, performative quality through the dynamics of movement and facial and body language.
